Prescription Acomplia [rimonabant] is a medication prescribed to assist in the treatment of obesity along with other conditions related to obesity. Prescription Acomplia is a new drug that appears in a different way than the previous weight loss drug Reductil and Prescription Xenical. Clinical trials have shown that Prescription Acomplia helped to improve a very wide range of hjärtmetaboliska factors that are quite risky for people who are overweight. About half of the persons involved in clinical trial studies showed improvement in their triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol and HbA1c. The new diet drug Prescription Acomplia with the active ingredient rimonabant can give a weight loss of 10 percent in one year. It was approved for marketing in the European Union in June 2006.

How does Accomplia work?

Accomplia acts by selectively blocking CB1 receptors found in the brain and in peripheral organs important in glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism, including adipose tissue, the liver, gastrointestinal tract and muscle1. Prescription Acomplia switches off the same brain circuits that make people hungry when they smoke cannabis. CB1 receptor blockade with Prescription Acomplia acts to decrease the overactivity of the endocannabinoid system (EC system)2,3. The EC system is a recently characterised physiological system that includes receptors such as the CB1 receptor and it has been shown to play an important role in regulating body weight and in controlling energy balance, as well as glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism. What is Prescription Acomplia used for? Accomplia is used complementary to diet and exercise to treat obese or overweight patients who suffer from Type 2 diabetes and abnormal levels of fat in the blood. Sanofi argues that Prescription Acomplia can also prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease. Patients with large waist circumference (102 cm in men and 88 cm in women) will mostly benefit from taking the drug. Does Prescription Acomplia also aid smoking cessation? Prescription Acomplia has been studied by sanofi-aventis as an aid to smoking cessation based on studies for up to one year in over 6,500 smokers motivated to quit smoking. Sanofi-aventis submitted a New Drug Application to the FDA, which in turn issued a non approvable letter for Prescription Acomplia for use in smoking cessation. An approvable letter was however issued for Prescription Acomplia for use in weight management. Prescription Acomplia has just been approved in the European Union. Is Prescription Acomplia approved in the United States? No. Sanofi is still awaiting U.S. marketing go-ahead which it has said could come by the end of this year. U.S. health authorities have asked Sanofi for more information on Prescription Acomplia. Prescription Acomplia received European Union marketing approval in June 2006. The first launch will take place in Britain in July and be followed by launches in Denmark, Ireland, Germany, Finland and Norway in the second half of this year, according to Sanofi. What were the results of Prescription Acomplia Clinical trial studies? In clinical studies, Prescription Acomplia has been shown to improve a wide array of cardiometabolic risk factors as well as promoting sustained weight loss4,5. Approximately half of the observed improvement in HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and HbA1C (an indicator of blood sugar control) in patients who received Prescription Acomplia 20mg was beyond that expected from weight loss alone6. What are the side-effects of Prescription Acomplia? Side effects in the trial on Prescription Acomplia in obesity were vomiting and nausea, forcing about 19 percent of patients to leave the trial versus 13 percent of those who took placebo. Prescription Acomplia, was found in recent studies to significantly improve the blood glucose control of type 2 diabetic patients in a major clinical trial called ARPEGGIO, researchers reported on June 10th at the 68th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association. The researchers said that patients in the multicenter trial who were given a 20 mg daily dose of Prescription Acomplia in addition to their daily insulin saw their HbA1c (a standard measure of glucose control) improve by .89 percent, tripling the number of diabetics reaching the recommended 7% HbA1c level. Glucose control was three times more pronounced when Prescription Acomplia was added to the daily regime than insulin and lifestyle advice alone. The 368 type 2 diabetics participating in the 11-month trial, carried out at 60 centers in 12 countries, had been treated with insulin for an average duration of six years prior to entering the study. “The ARPEGGIO trial demonstrated that there is still room for significant improvement in diabetic patients who despite several years of standard therapies including insulins, in addition to diet and exercise measures, are not well controlled,” said Dr. Priscilla L. Hollander of Baylor University Medical Center. Sanofi continues to plan to resubmit Prescription Acomplia for U.S. FDA approval for treatment of diabetes next year, even though last year it abandoned its bid to get Prescription Acomplia approved for weight control after serious concern was raised over psychiatric side effects. In the ARPEGGIO trial, researchers said anxiety was reported by 14 percent of the patients taking Prescription Acomplia compared to 5 percent in the control group, and depression was reported by 14 percent taking Prescription Acomplia compared to 7.5 percent in the control group. Most of the diabetic patients enrolled in the trial had a medical history of depression, Sanofi said. ARPEGGIO was designed to assess the value of Prescription Acomplia as an add-on therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes who are treated with insulin, yet require further glycemic control. In addition to the significant improvement of HbA1c, patients taking Prescription Acomplia also had a statistically significant body weight loss, losing over five pounds more during the trial compared to those on a placebo.

The Brits want more Prescription Acomplia

Those nice people from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) have issued new guidelines to doctors in the UK recommending they make greater use of Prescription Acomplia. NICE has the responsibility of leading the fight against obesity. It has adopted a national policy that urgent action is needed, but there are only a few treatments considered suitable for patients.

Why Prescription Acomplia? Because in every clinical trial, all the participants not only lost weight but also improved their cardiovascular risk profile. To explain: when people who are either overweight or obese lose weight, their general health improves. Almost all are exposed to greater risks through high blood pressure, heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes. But when Prescription Acomplia is used, the improvement is way beyond what is expected from weight loss alone. For example, people with Type 2 Diabetes not taking anti-diabetic medication significantly improve their blood sugar control and reduce the levels of LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides. So Prescription Acomplia in combination with a healthy diet and physical exercise is now the preferred treatment.

Why now? A new national survey shows that 75% of Brits think their health providers should help the overweight lose weight. The poll is significant because opinion now classifies obesity as a medical and not a social problem. This is no longer seen as something people should tackle with the help of family, friends, dieting or slimming clubs. Physicians are seen as having the primary role in achieving weight loss.

What has caused this shift in pubic opinion? Heart problems are the UK’s biggest cause of death with more than 200,000 deaths a year. There are 35,000 deaths a year from Type 2 Diabetes. Alongside, the rate of obesity has trippled. Economists now estimate the total cost to society and the tax payer as being more than £7.4 billion a year. So Brits are doing the math. They now see how much more they have to pay in tax to deal with this problem. They are also more likely to know someone who has died because of weight-related conditions. To help reinforce the need for action, from September, UK schools will weigh and measure children up to the age of 11 years and send parents a “weight” report.

That puts Prescription Acomplia in the front line to help fight obesity because the social and financial burdens to society get too great.
